Power Generator HERO picture

Power to the people

Helping each other through a crisis

The recent economic collapse in Sri Lanka has had profound negative effects on the resources that are available to the public. Due to the increasing prices and lack of gasoline, the current government has had to schedule planned power cuts throughout the island. In Kuruwita those power cuts are in place from 9am to 7pm. This used to make working a challenge for the Sunrise Facets team as they need power for the cutting machines. That meant that the team had to work from 7pm until midnight to work around the power cuts.

“Queues for the gas stations in Sri Lanka would be hours, sometimes days long, at the peak of the crisis”

To help Sunrise Facets we in Wennick–Lefèvre decided to buy a power generator for the factory to allow them to work through these power cuts. Alex Monroe heard about our plans and asked to be part of this purchase to support their supply chain. They have now proudly contributed 50% of the power generator cost and are also in the process of creating an entire collection made exclusively with stones from Sunrise Facets. We appreciate Alex Monroe as their actions show that we are one supply chain that has each other’s backs in times of need. They were enthusiastic to help Nilanthi and her team to get back to their normal and support however they could – something that Nilanthi herself really appreciated:

“Everything has increased a lot in price. We don’t know when it goes back down and that’s difficult. The power generator that Svend and Alex Monroe gave us helped us, because now we work normal times again. Before this my cutters would sit and wait to get back to work. Our working hours are much better now”

The Wennick–Lefèvre team went to visit the Sunrise Facets team in Kuruwita at the end of august. As we were sitting on Nilanthi’s balcony, sorting stones for new orders, the power suddenly went out at 12.54 but turned back on one minute later due to the generator working its magic. This was a small thing that we could do as clients and extended business family, that has made a major difference for Nilanthi and her team.
